22nd Annual SHORT GRAIN (with Variations) Contest

The Short Grain (with Variations) contest offers $6,000 in cash prizes for original, unpublished works. Each entrant receives a one-year (four-issue) subscription to Grain Magazine. All contest winners will also have their winning piece published in a 2010 issue of the magazine. Postmark deadline for this year's contest is April 1st, 2010.

4 prizes will be awarded in each category:

1st Prize: $ 1,250
2nd Prize: $ 750
1st runner Up: $ 500
2nd Runner Up: $ 500

Categories

Poetry of any style up to 100 lines.

Short fiction in any form to a maximum of 2500 words.

Judges

Poetry: Jennifer Still

Jennifer Still's second poetry collection, Girlwood, the manuscript of which won the 2008 John V. Hicks Award, is forthcoming with Brick Books in Spring, 2011. Her first book, Saltations (Thistledown), was nominated for three Saskatchewan Book Awards. She is the recipient of the 2008 Saskatchewan Emerging Artist Award; also in 2008 she was a finalist (twice) for the CBC Literary Awards. Co-founder of JackPine Press, Jennifer now lives in Winnipeg.


Short Fiction: Lee Henderson

Lee Henderson is the author of the award-winning short story collection The Broken Record Technique and the novel The Man Game. He is a contributing editor to the art magazines Border Crossings and Contemporary and has published fiction and art criticism in numerous periodicals. His fiction has twice been featured in the Journey Prize Anthology. He lives in Vancouver.

Entry Rules

1. The fee for Canadian entrants is $30 for a maximum of two entries in one category; for US and International entrants $36 payable in US funds. Make your cheque or money order payable to: Short Grain Contest.

2. Every entrant receives a one-year (four-issue) subscription to Grain Magazine.

3. Entries must be POSTMARKED by April 1, 2010. Late entries will not be accepted.

4. Each entry must be original, unpublished, not submitted elsewhere for publication or broadcast, nor accepted elsewhere for publication or broadcast, nor entered simultaneously in any other contest or competition for which it is also eligible to win a prize.

5. All entries in this contest will be judged anonymously, on merit alone. The judges' decisions are final. Judges reserve the right not to award a prize in a given category if no entry is of sufficient quality to warrant publication.

6. A separate covering page must be attached to your entry with the following information:

     a) Your name, complete mailing address, telephone number, and email address.

     b) Title of your entry / entries.

     c) Categories you are entering: Poetry or Short Fiction.

     d) Word Count (Fiction) / Line Count (Poetry). An accurate word or line count is required.

7. Your entry must be legible and typed (double-spaced for fiction) on 8 1/2 x 11 inch paper. Do not include your name on the pages of your entry. Faxed and/or electronic entries not accepted.

8. Entries will not be returned. Keep a copy of your entry. We will notify you of the final results at the end of the contest IF YOU ENCLOSE AN SASE OR EMAIL ADDRESS FOR THAT PURPOSE ONLY. US and International entries please send an IRC or CANADIAN POSTAGE.

9. 22nd Annual Short Grain (with Variations) Contest WINNING ENTRIES will be posted on the Grain Magazine website in August, 2010. Contest winners will be notified either by telephone, by email, or in writing prior to the website posting.
