The Maps We Make

Grain Volume 42 No. 3, Spring 2015

This issue's title arises from Alexander McCall Smith's novel Love Over Scotland: "Regular maps have few surprises: their contour lines reveal where the Andes are, and are reasonably clear. More precious, though, are the unpublished maps we make ourselves, of our city, our place, our daily world, our life...." The Maps We Make is about how we create our own paths, how we navigate the surprising and sometimes dangerous topography of relationships, thoughts, emotions, and impulses. Sometimes we settle into those landscapes, furnishing little hobbit-holes for ourselves and finding peace; other times, we find the landscapes hostile, and either escape, or crash and burn.
