A moth, the last insect
I would pilot from a dying earth,
the creature Noah mistook
for dust, rests among socks on
the dresser, flying now and
then, holding back sleep
like a night guard manning
a dam. I grab after the body but
it’s more dress than wind,
weightless, some fallen piece of
aYukon moon. I try again
but now the phone is ringing past
the hall, in a lampless room
where I am talking to someone
I haven’t heard from
in too long, and we’re trading
news like neighbours back
from summer vacation, showing
each other bright postcards
from across the lawn, our voices
hung wide as sheets on
the line, travelling back and
forth like excited sails of cloth.
